Its not necessarily that its lazy, but more that Retro are one of Nintendo's few developers who have proved themselves capable to take on more diversifying, mature IPs as seen with Metroid Prime. Nintendo however have a dozen teams well versed at creating 2D platformers, many of whom could have taken Retro's first DK title and built upon it, leaving Retro to fulfil a much more needed vacancy in Nintendo's library. Its not just Metroid people were hoping for, I'm sure many would have been ecstatic with a New IP or a Brave new take on Starfox.
