I think in the case in piracy it does not always amount to losses by a company. I mean yes the product that was pirated should have been paid for instead of stolen, however, that does not mean that the pirate would have paid for it had they not have been able to get it for free.
I also think this is true, to a lesser extent, to used games. Majority of the games I buy used I would not have bought new especially at the initial release price. I normally know what new titles I'll want before they come out and weigh my purchase decision on what is coming out at what time and the money I'll have to spend. However, when I do have some extra cash to spend I might spend it on a game if I find a price point and a game I think is worth it, which normally ends up being a used game.
