There needs to a balance between what the consumers want and what the game companies want.
The consumers can't have the final say on everything. The game companies are the ones who invest money making these games and they would like some security.

are you serious??? Of course the gamers have the final say.  They spend the money!  Adapt or die, every other market is the same.

If you let people on this forum have their own way then they would demand AAA high-budget games be free-to-play, no multiplayer, no microtransactions, free DLC etc.

Game companies can do whatever they want with their own products. If you don't like it, don't spend the money.

so what?  Let the whiney gamers whine and stop making so many high budget games.  When there are less games to fight over developers will get enough money.  Markets are self adjusting, there's no need to artificially prop them up.  The music industry barely sells CDs anymore and they are fine.  Many games are evolving to models like mechwarrior where it's free to play but there are many things to pay for if you want to get everything.  Several big budget console games each year is not sustainable, it's gonna end.
