There are two things:
1. A large number of users are ill informed or dont care
2. Companies with poor products that don't work that great can sell loads if marketed right to 1 (Kinect prime example).
I wont be buying regardless of what games they get, just because of the online requirements part. But just reading Eurogamer today, a few people are saying how they will cave in from multiple issues if PGR is released. And there lies the problem, that many people cannot keep with their convictions. They shout, they argue they state how disgusted they are, then they go do it anyway.
I guess MS have looked at Simcity/Diablo and saw that though people are complaining, that the games still sold.... so just give them the bad news, give them some good news and all will be well. And considering how Simcity/Diablo sold, I pretty much agree with them.
