I find it funny that the gaming media thought 2008 was Nintendos worst year for games, yet it was nintendos most successful year by far in profits, game sales, and system sales for nintendos history

Totally. Nonsensical seems to be the norm these days.

Funny also that Animal Crossing, Mario Kart and Smash are hailed as these saviours. Smash is incredible, no doubt. But just those 3 still make it a very, very sparse gaming landscape in my book. 

Well Iin addition to those 3, there was also De Blob, Boom Blox, Endless Ocean, Wii Music, Dragon Quest Swords, Star Wars Force Unleashed, Rock Band. Im not saying its the best year ever but it had a solid line up that hit many different genres.
