"At a roundtable this morning, Sony's game studios chief, Shuhei Yoshida, told reporters that any requirement for users to register a game online in order to play it would be left to game publishers. Sony won't require that." (Emphasis added.) Apologies for missing that during our attempts to clarify just how similar or dissimilar Sony's next-gen policies are from Microsoft's."

I've been a little out of the loop with the whole fiasco, but isn't this what Microsoft are doing as well? No registration needed for first party games, but up to publishers for third party?

No, MS has a whole mandatory online check that ties the game to the account and you can't rent or loan games at launch and when you are able to eventually at a later date you can loan it a grand total of 1 time to someone who has been on your friend list for over 30 days that you need to give permission to and leaves your console as a blu-ray player if you don't connect everyday... However, in addition to that system MS will also allow third parties to fuck you harder if they want to include online passes.
