In hindsight I think Nintendo would've opted not to build the DS successor around the 3D concept, but hindsight is 20/20. They probably felt like they needed some kind of "hook" and that was the best they could come up with.

Unfortunately for them when the system didn't sell well initially, it burned them and they had to eat a hardware loss which led to their first fiscal loss in company history. That type of 3D screen is a custom component and was likely pretty expensive.

Yeah, ever since the DS they've always had some unique thing going on physically with their systems. I've liked all the gimmicks thus far, but I don't think they need anything new for the next handheld. Just an overall improvement from the 3DS. Make it HD, glasses free 3D without a sweet spot on both screens, touchscreen is also widescreen, a second circle pad on the left side, give the circle pads ridges or bumps so your thumbs can't slide off, a higher quality camera, and so ons. That would be my dream machine, but it'll probably take two gens to get there, atleast at a reasonable price.
