Having yet to play a Mario & Luigi RPG title, I'm probably not qualified to speak here, but I have always heard good things about the series. For me, I LOVED Paper Mario and Paper Mario: TTYD...two of my favorite games ever. Since then though...meh. Super Paper Mario wasn't even REALLY a Paper Mario game....it was like Nintendo had a unique gameplay hook/idea and then pasted Paper Mario into it. I had REALLY high hopes for Sticker Star based on the early development screenshots, but then Miyamoto stepped in and messed things up. Don't get me wrong, the guy's a genius with his own games...but just because someone else is using his characters, doesn't mean he should ALWAYS be able to upend the tea-table. It was stated in an interview at some point that Paper Mario 3DS was SUPPOSED to be like the first two...an RPG with partners and all. But Miyamoto requested that no characters differ from how they would REALLY be in the Mushroom Kingdom (ie. can't have a goomba or a koopa as a partner, since they're natural "baddies.") and so the entire game was switched around. Very disappointed with how it turned out...still looked great and full of charm...but the gameplay itself and the RPG feel was shattered. Dream Team looks great and I'm excited to try a Mario & Luigi game for the first time. Hopefully it'll live up to the hype and hopefully Intelligent Systems goes back to Paper Mario basics for a Wii U game.

sticker star was just the straw that broke the camel's back, he already pulled that no story crap on mario galaxy and new super mario bros, and then he says that sticker star doesn't need a story, even though paper mario games are known for their stories, and it's funny how he called the beta version of sticker star a port of ttyd and he said it was boring, but he's ok with every new super mario bros game rehashing the same material four times, this just shows what a hypocrite he is

1) Platformers are far less engaging than Paper Mario games, especially since now you can save. I mean, let's face it. Super Mario World was really a slight upgrade from SMB3 with Yoshi and less powerups. Cosmetic changes, not much gameplay changes.

RPG games require MUCH more interaction, so it being merely a "port of the other game" would be more noticeable.

Also, the lack of story was also a response to a survey where 1% said they actually cared about it.

This doesn't make him a hypocrite.

2) Also, Sticker Star is the first Paper Mario game to be handheld, I'm sure a lot of the changes were made to the handheld game BECAUSE of the fact that you're playing on the go, so something more simple would suffice. Not a complex story.

And since when did the core Mario games ever have a good story? The people in that survey said they didn't care for the Paper Mario story BECAUSE people play a Mario game for the gameplay. If they want a story, they'll watch Metal Gear Solid cutscenes.

Oh well...

Baloney. I totally agree with what 1800Hernandez was saying on there (before his comments got banned for too many "negative" votes). Sad that people buy into that "it's on a handheld so you can't have an epic story" garbage. Fire Emblem: Awakening is one of my favorite games of all time and it managed to contain a pretty darn impressive story for "just being a handheld game." And also, there's no comparison between a 2D platformer and RPGs in terms of how "important" a story is. Miyamoto specializes in gameplay...he creates games based on the "feel" and thus you get action games like 2D and 3D Mario as well as Zelda. Those games are great..nothing wrong with that. But RPGs aren't really about the "feel"...they're more about the characters, the story, the progression and development you feel by levelling. And to me, getting a new page in my Sticker Book so I could carry more one-use, disposable stickers at a time is NOT the same as gaining levels, increasing stats, and feeling like your character is developing and becoming more powerful through your efforts in battle. Paper Mario has ALWAYS been a simplistic RPG series...RPG-lite if you will, but the first two STILL had levels and experiences points and things you could upgrade and improve. Plus partners helped add in a little strategy for battles. Sticker Star was like a puzzle game, you COULDN"T beat certain bosses unless you had brought the right "thing" sticker...and there was NO incentive for fighting random enemies in the field other than getting a couple weak stickers or coins to buy more weak stickers. Such a waste of Intelligent System's time and talent.
