Isn't Unity a very big 3rd party engine which cost 5-8x less than UnrealEngine?  Thus it is the reason why Nintendo chose this as their "main" engine of choice?

I'm not sure of the technicalities, but I do think you're right. However, I also think making sure they have support on all major engines is money well spent.
