I did not get the impression that Kinect 2 could do that based on the conference. I mean, it looked more accurate than Kinect 1 but nowhere near that accurate.

It actually can. Take a look at the Verge or Wired vocerage. It knows if you're "engaged", which means looking at the screena nd even if your eyes are open.
