By paywall, do you mean the online code system sony already has or something more?
I reckon they can and may keep the online code system they currently have but I find it hard to believe they will actually go any further. Sony know we gamers generally dislike this and they have been careful not to implement policies that are too unfriendly to gamers.
If however, this sort of thing is implemented similar to the XBO, then I do expect considerable criticism but somewhat less than the XBO has received so far. Reason for this is that the XBO will be seen as implementing this first and the ps4 will be following them (or this will be the perception). Ergo, the criticism the ps4 will get will be less as they will be following the trend.
