Mainstream Media loves the Xbox One - Are "hardcore" gamers becoming irrelevant?

Incorrect, the Wii sold to all demographics at launch as it attracted people with the revolutionary motion gaming.  You don't need the "hardcore" to sell at launch but Microsoft will be catering for them too at E3.

I said launch period.  On Launch period, hardcore gamers with a console of choice, buy without caring much for the price.   On the long run yeah, normal gamers and casuals buy the console.
