I don't think any outside characters belong in Mario Kart. And yes, I'm fully aware that Namco threw in a couple of their characters to the MK arcade games.
But I wouldn't be against a Sega/Nintendo crossover racer, that had Mario and Sonic characters, AS WELL as other Nintendo and Sega characters. That, if not rushed, and actually polished up enough, could be pretty cool.
