First person shooters are today what platformers / sidescrolling action games were back in the 8-16 bit eras. I didn't hear anybody complain about the mind numbing amount of cheap platformers and sidescrollers back in the day. For every quality platformer like a Mario or Sonic game, there were a dozen lazy, uninspired, usually based on a license platformers that would make you pull your hair out after spending 5 minutes with them.

Just look at all the AVGN videos if you want proof.

In terms of revenue, yes you're right, in terms of literal evolution, third person games are the natural evolution not FPS.

?  Not sure what you mean by that... weren't 95% of games essentially "third person" already, from the early arcade games to the 2D sidescrollers to the vast majority of 3D games from the 32-bit gen and on?  What does one have to do with the other?

The way I look at it, first person games in general today are a natural evolution the immersive experience that videogames can provide and have taken great strides to provide in the past. And with the advent of more photo-realistic looking 3D games, playing many of them from a first person perspective, whether it be action, shooter, racing, etc, are experiences that you just couldn't get in generations past.  Games like Mirror's Edge, Portal, Fallout / Skyrim, in-car views in racing sims like GT and Forza, in addition to the plethora of top FPS games out there, are some of the most immersive games I've played and are just a few examples of how videogames have evolved over the past three decades.

All I'm saying is that all the shooting / action games of yesteryear that were done from a 2D sidescrolling perspective have now evolved into first person experiences, and being that shooting things has been a staple of videogames going back to the days of Space Invaders, it's only natural that these are some of the most popular types of games today, as the first-person perspective fits shooters perfectly, where it's had mixed results with other genres.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
