Here is a better question what position would Microsoft and Sony be in if they had the same 3rd party support as Nintendo?

So I don't think they have lost touch with N America but rather don't have enough support from 3rd party to give consumers a reason to make a Nintendo their primary console.

Unlike Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft actually take developers seriously and cater to their wants and needs when designing their hardware, so it's a moot point. Their system isn't about them, it's about the market at large and how to be THE system.

Sometimes I get the feeling Nintendo doesn't want any serious competition on their own consoles, otherwise I just can't make sense of it.

Regardless, as far as on topic goes, North Americans will buy the Wii U in droves for the next Mario Kart, they will buy it in droves for the next Smash Bros, and I think it will do absolutely amazing at the end of this year and into the next... But after that, I really think it's pretty much done sales wise, I really don't see it having the legs the 360 and PS3 had for instance, and beyond those two titles, without serious 3rd party of something like Wii Sports that they already failed to achieve,  I don't see anything but price cut after price cut seriously pushing systems.

Yes, people will buy the next Zelda, and the next Metroid, and the next 3D Mario in the millions, sure, but I don't think any of those will sell systems to people that Smash didn't already sell to. At least for the most part. Seeing mid thirty million lifetime.
