J.J. Abrams wanted to keep people guessing until they saw the movie, and he did deliver IMO.

OT: Is Wrath of Khan worth a watch for someone that hasn't watched anything pre-2009 Star Trek? Or is it a direct sequel or something?

Definitely worth a watch. As mentioned, the character Khan was in an episode of the original series, but it doesn't matter if you haven't seen it since the story is explained in the movie.

I like the Star Trek series and (some) movies, but I'm not a really huge fan or anything and yet The Wrath of Khan is one of my favorite movies of all time. I own it on blu-ray and it's great.
