That's an awful reason though. It was several after the game and it had become a cult hit. It has fantastic legs and had some but great feedback. If that was truly the reason for lack of publishing, wouldn't they possibly have re-evaluated at the point it became very popular? Sony lost out of multi-million selling franchises because Yoshida was dumb.

I don't really know if it was such an obvious hit at that point. From what I remember there was a lot of buzz on GAF from people who had imported, but Japanese sales weren't great right off and there was really no indication that it would end up anywhere near as huge as it became. It's the kind of thing that's funny to read in retrospect, but I can see it from their point of view, too. The very nature of the game - YOU ARE DEAD! - makes a pretty unforgiving first impression.

It is pretty dumb to be so out of touch with their own product, though. Hopefully it has been a learning experience for them.

It had great legs. Opened with like 30k and ended over 250k. That's super rare, especially with something like Demon's Souls. It was several months before Atlus picked it up though (and I imported as well). At that point, there was a lot of positive stuff about it on the net. They didn't bring it over and brought other things that were never going to be big successes either.
