PS2 owes a large amount of its market dominance to DVD compatibility. Brilliant move by Sony. Also practically the definition of "casual" by most standards, but only most, not all, which is why the casual and core labels are meaningless.

You croppped nothing. The best selling games on the PS2 were core games. Not so on the Wii. PS2 owes a large amount of its market dominance to DVD... in its first year. In the 2nd year, they destroyed with:

GT3: A-Spec

GTA 3

MGS2

FFX

Jak & Daxter

TM: Black


PS2 wasnt a casual console in the same sense as Wii. Wii did it with software aimed at people who dont play games, PS2 did it by being the first console to play DVDs. Alot of people didnt buy PS2 because it was a game system but because it was a DVD player that happened to play games as well and the same price.

 

Except those people who bought a PS2 to play DVDs are a much smaller fraction that the casuals that bought the Wii. Afterall, by 2001, DVD players cheaper than the PS2 were available. I bought a DVD player in 2002 (to watch LOTR:FotR Extended Edition) and I was still in high school back then.
