Nintendo really isn't competing with MS/Sony anymore in a direct way I don't think.

I doubt if you went into the store on launch day and talked to PS4/720 buyers that any of them would consider a Wii U over those consoles. Those people have their tastes and Nintendo does not cater to them nearly enough.

Nintendo will be continually chasing the dragon of the "family friendly console", which relies more on the "parents playing with their kids" concept.

There was nothing stopping Nintendo from releasing a Wii successor in 2010 or 2011 either, but they barely even made a 2012 launch.

PS4/720 will be around for 7-8 years *minimum*, probably more like 10 years. The budget you're going to need to create games that go beyond PS4/720 complexity will be like a movie budget, I think most devs are just fine with PS4/720 for a long time.
