Both the Vita and 3DS are great consoles and well built, and both had a poor start. However, Nintendo addressed the problems surrounding the 3DS; namely the high price and lack of compelling software, before the situation became irretrievable. Sony has not managed to do this, nor does it seem as through they have any intention of doing so. Which is a little bit sad.
So although the Vita is not a bad console (I enjoy mine but am struggling for something to play after Soul Sacrifice), the only person who can be blaimed for the failure is Sony themselves.
