It was a CPU intensive engine that was ported without optimisation to a console with a completely different architecture using an Alpha dev kit. The Metro engine (whose name escapes me for the moment) is notorious in the industry for being a resource hog.

As for the RAM you've got to remember that Nintendo have an absolutely insane compression algorithm and that it's only a 4 to 1 leap. We don't know how much of that 8GB is usable...if you're going to say the PS4 has 8GB you have to say that the Wii U has 2GB, you can't have one rule for one console and a completely different rule for the other two.
