It would be the kernel, not the full blown OS, Microsoft will want it locked down for financial and piracy reasons and to keep publishers/developers happy.

I love windows 8.. it's windows 7 with a more user friendly start area for quicklaunching to programs and better search functionaility.

The way to find the love for Windows 8 is to use shortcut keys on your keyboard.  With Windows 8 you want to setup either your desktop or the metro interface with the most used programs and folders of content.  Once you have that setup then windows key and start typing pretty much get you where you want to go much faster than using the mouse to click around.
