I think the economy is the wild card here. We hit a slump in 2009 and we're still in recovery. If sony can price the PS4 at $400 for launch (which actually seems a little UNLIKELY given everything in it), they might hit the ground running. I think snowdog was mentioning supply constraints. There might be some at 28nm, no doubt, but probably not as bad as if they were at 20nm or below.
I plan to buy a bunch and resell them to rabid fans.

As far as I'm aware nobody is producing anything lower than a 28nm process yet. 28nm is still pretty new, hence my saying there would be a lot of wasted silicone.
But you're certainly right about the economy being an important factor, we're not even in recovery yet...at least not here in the UK. I just can't see Sony or Microsoft releasing their consoles for less than $400 given the hardware, Kinect, camera bar, controllers etc.
