When your next gen handheld is fully Backwards Compatible, it renders production of the previous version unnecessary.  I recall people on this site complaining that DS sales were too high just a few months ago claiming it was stealing sales from it's successor.  DS sales didn't die, 3DS sales took off and successfully replaced it in the handheld market.

This isn't really the case.  DS sales had started to collapse prior to the release of the 3DS.  Even so, the 3DS is not doing what the DS was selling prior to the launch.  2012 saw 3DS+DS sales drop 4.3 million despite an extra few months on the market for the 3DS.  It has seen further declines in the first four months of this year.
