At the time it was argued that they were both consoles by definition. And wether they were home consoles or handhelds was irrelevant.

In any case whatever the point of view is for people in regards to that argument it no longer applies as the DS was unable to surpass the PS2.

 

It is of relevance. Handhelds have more people to target than consoles.

For the record I agree that it's not a valid comparison simply because the potential for handheld sales is so much higher compared to home consoles.

I guess it makes the PS2's performance even more impressive when viewed in that light.
