Nintendo's lack of third party support severely damaged its sales in the N64, Gamecube and Wii U. Wii sales could have been more if it had a decent third party support. Nintendo relies too heavily upon first party in house Nintendo franchises to sell its systems. Nintendo relies to much upon Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda and Smash Brothers series to sell systems.

Both Sony and Microsoft have excellent third party support. Sony has the advantage in regards to exclusive games but that has diminished from PS2 era to PS3 era with games becoming multi-platform and appearing on Microsoft's XBox 360. Microsoft has lack of exclusive game series and it relies heavily upon Halo, Gears of War, Fable and Forza series. Sony still has a lot of first and second party developers that make games exclusive for the Playstation console systems.

The N64 had problems due to the media used, same with the GameCube. The Wii had problems with the TEV Unit in Flipper/Hollywood giving the GPU a nonstandard rendering pipeline.

The Wii U isn't going to have these problems, and it's going to have a superior marketshare for a while unless the PS4 and 720 fly off shelves. You'll see the Wii U getting a SKU of all major third party titles during these next few years, even after development for the PS3 and 360 dries up around 2015. Once the likes of 3D Mario, Mario Kart 8, Retro's new title, Zelda U, SSB U, Metroid, Wii Sports U etc hit shop shelves the consoles are going to sell and third party support will come unless publishers don't want to stay in business.

Nintendo have recently been talking to retailers about their plans for the Wii U and it appears that any previous concerns they've had have been laid to rest.

I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I've got serious concerns that this gen is going to finish Sony.

"The Wii U isn't going to have these problems"

The Wii U is already having problems with third party support.
