Yeah you lucked out in the US when SoA dropped the DC. In Europe a lot of those games did actually make it out. Though I still call bull on Jet Set Radio 2. That was blatently JSRF for Xbox even though Sega were adamant they were 2 separate games at the time. We got lucky in Europe thanks to Bigben Interactve (a peripheral manufacturer like Mad Catz) picking up all rights to the system in Europe. They managed to get Headhunter, Shenmue 2 etc all released here. I really followed Dreamcast closely at the time. Love the system. I'll agree piracy wasn't the single factor, but I still think it was a massively strong factor, certainly another "nail in the coffin" as you would say. As for comparing Wii U to Dreamcast, it's just a massive LOL their circumstances are completely different in pretty much every way. Dreamcast was a next gen system that was ahead of it's time. Wii U is using current generation technology with new control ideas. Dreamcast came off the back of several high profile hardware failures for Sega, Wii U comes off the back of one of the best selling home consoles of all time. Sega threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Dreamcast software-wise. Nintendo have put out a handful of games in 6 months none of them IMO being a major system seller. |
Good summary, funnt actually haven't really thought about the Dreamcast that much since it went down the toilet. But this thread has reminded me that I think if maybe not the best games, certainly the most fun games were out on it for me at the time. Maybe that was down to age etc who knows, and I definitely always seem to tell people who make those threads about how great the Dreamcast was to shut it :)
That's the argumentative contrary git side in me, plus it seems to be the cool thing to think these days. Doubt those people even had a Dreamcast but you sir have my respect as you were clearly there when it all went down and thanks for reminding me of all those memories...remember the news on IGN now like it was yesterday and stupidly believing those "over 100 games" would be released.
Still, we did get Shenmue 2 (I'm from the UK ;)) so can't really complain even if not voice localized but some might say that was a good thing, again not me because it's cool to like undubs and I'm not cool! :P
...maybe I should try and be happier :D
