It was already dead. In fact didn't Sega release a revision without MIL CD support at least 6 months before it was dropped. Like you say, Sega ran out of cash, remmeber them even saying that they were dropping it but there were still "over 100 games due to be released for it"...of those 100, about 10 actually came out, if that.

Not outside limited edition systems in Japan. All US and EU consoles supported MIL CD.

Yeah you lucked out in the US when SoA dropped the DC. In Europe a lot of those games did actually make it out. Though I still call bull on Jet Set Radio 2. That was blatently JSRF for Xbox even though Sega were adamant they were 2 separate games at the time.

We got lucky in Europe thanks to Bigben Interactve (a peripheral manufacturer like Mad Catz) picking up all rights to the system in Europe. They managed to get Headhunter, Shenmue 2 etc all released here.

I really followed Dreamcast closely at the time. Love the system. I'll agree piracy wasn't the single factor, but I still think it was a massively strong factor, certainly another "nail in the coffin" as you would say.

As for comparing Wii U to Dreamcast, it's just a massive LOL their circumstances are completely different in pretty much every way. Dreamcast was a next gen system that was ahead of it's time. Wii U is using current generation technology with new control ideas. Dreamcast came off the back of several high profile hardware failures for Sega, Wii U comes off the back of one of the best selling home consoles of all time. Sega threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Dreamcast software-wise. Nintendo have put out a handful of games in 6 months none of them IMO being a major system seller.
