Reporting these days is pretty bad, maybe I should try my hand at it since apparently these days you don't have to be accurate just recycle what you think you heard.

But yeah, Nintendo just isn't going to pay the E3 heads a massive amount to rent space for a press conference, they will still no doubt have announcements around E3, they have demos for fans and media to try but they aren't going to try to impress the reporters by making a large show of things, which is probably going to be the standard outside of hardware announcements, given the rising costs of everything and the limited returns you are to get compared to just standard hyping the media provides.

That's where the numerious NDs come in leading up to E3. These will still be watched and reported on by the same media.

Exactly, Nintendo (and really no major publisher) doesn't have to spend the money to make a big presentation of things at E3, so they are going to. Microsoft and Sony showing casing their new hardware might like to make the effort but even that really is unnecessary given the volume of media and outlets that consumers can get out there covering games compared to years back when E3 was at its zenith. Not to mention E3 promoters themselves tried to shrink the event at one a few years ago due to the rising costs, Nintendo is just down sizing the money they spend on it. Others are likely to do the same, financial troubles have taken a chunk out of everybody. 

In addition they will probally do what they did with the last ND. Hold all the big announcments for a ND that will be broadcast on Tuesday, while the press is having their closed door session with Nintendo. And once the ND is over they will be able to post their impressions on the games that were announced. That is what they did with LoZ:Lttp2, while the ND was playing the press was more than likely at Nintendo's San Francisco office playing the game. So once it was done IGN amoung other we able to go and post news/video feed back on what they though of playing the game.
