The disc drive is a standard Matsushita Blu-ray disc drive. Nothing special about the physical hardware. The proprietary part is the firmware Matsushita developed for it. The only real difference between the Wii U's Blu-ray disc drive a consumer Blu-ray disc drive is the firmware.

The 3DS has a sandboxed DS environment for DS games. All the exploits of the original DS carried over so the 3DS is hacked only in the sandboxed DS environment. The 3DS software environment has not yet been hacked.

I think there is more to it to play Bluray-movies. You need properly player-software (as I know you would need java for Blu-ray) and I think it will suffer the same problem as linux where it is (afaik) also not possible to play Blu-ray-movies that are drm'ed.

Someone will manage to crack the firmware of the BluRay-drive, just like the Wii's DVD drive. About the software part...either someone will figure it out or I'll resort to mkv's if someone manages to import the codecs.
