Nintendo not holding traditional E3 press conference this year?

Functionally, as far as media coverage is concerned, there is no difference between Nintendo's plans for this E3 and their previous conferences.

There is difference... next year Nintendo will have a E3 conference again... it's just this year because the news are not that strong to face the competition reveal.

Just what IS that difference? If the media still covers their announcements in the same breath as Microsoft's and Sony's, it's the same as any other E3. Nintendo might receive less attention because they're not launching new hardware, but the type of conference they hold won't change that.
