Starfox 64 and SNES were masterpieces. F Zero X and GX were masterpieces. |
I disagree. They were all extremely enjoyable games, but not masterpieces. Take the example of Star Fox64, I understand you could do multiple runs. But 1 runthrough toke around 1hour to complete. After that, all you could do is do it again trying to reach different paths to reach again the same goal in around a hour.
And the story was terribly told, all it was is at the start of every level, you hear general Pepper make one sentence to explain what your doing. Such as ''Star Fox, you need to destroy the enemie's secret weapon!'' and then Fox would answer ''We're on it General!''. Or ''Andross' army has invaded planet Omega!'' and Fox would be ''We're on our way!'' and then the level would start.
The Boss fights were also meh. Not a fan of the archaic concept of ''shoot the flashing spot on the boss till hes dead''.
The only thing I really liked (other than the fun gameplay offcaurse) are the characters, especyaly when they attempt to expand the roster with secondary ones. It was always a pleasure everytime Star Wolf made a appearance. The trash talk between the 2teams were fun to hear and I was asking for more (thankfully Assault made even better use of that concept with all the trash talk between Panther and Falco or how Pigma betrayed the team and how Wolf was forced to help Fox). Also liked the inclusion of more characters fighting in the same team as Star Fox like Kat and Billy, sadly these could have been expanded more, and I don't think they redone this in any new games after 64 (except maybe command, did'nt play that one so idk).
These arguments were more to show why I don't think 64 was a masterpiece. But my main point is that Star Fox and Fzero are just fun games because the gameplay concept is fun. All you do in Star Fox is play a course, see your score, and then start the next one. Same thing for Fzero. By design they can never be considered masterpieces the same way Metroid Prime, Mass Effect, Zelda or Bioshock can. And Retro is one of the few devs in Nintendo's arsenal that can make such masterpiece imo, so let these kind of games to less talented devs that we know can do just fine in making great enjoyable games but nothing more.
I'll admit that Star Fox has the potential of becoming much more if they add more background to the characters (both inside and outside team starfox), some huge free roaming lvls with epic huge galactic wars with houndreds of ships fighting, epic story with epic music. And offcaurse add online multiplayer with more than 4 freaking players. (+ I would'nt hate a coop mode since most lvls were always the 4members of team fox doing the same course at the same time anyway). I CAN see the possibilities, but I still feel like some other really talented devs are best suited for it, Nintendo have a bunch of talented devs that are capable of rising Star Fox to new heights. But I feel that Retro have much more potential than the Star Fox franchise itself. They can reach much more with Metroid or a new IP than it's possible for Star Fox.
As for FZero... Come on, this franchise as no real potantial, the same way Mario Kart has no potantial other than being EXTREMELY FUN. All they can do with it is better graphics, more ships, more tracks, few new gameplay elements and perfect the online play. Pretty much anyone can do this, they don't have to create new worlds, new characters or a emotional story while perfecting the story telling and character development. Give this franchise to the MK team once they are done with the Mario KartU and that should do just fine.
