What is your purpose when you argue on forums?

y'know I'm rarely trying to convince the person I'm actually arguing against, I find that's usually an unrealistic goal. Instead I argue just to get a view point out there that I think should be said. Not for the guy I'm arguing against but for the people that are just reading the thread without posting so that the person I disagree with isn't the only voice.
