I think Monster Hunter is a good example of why Japanese games are become less relevant these days. Western Devs try to get their games out on every format under the sun to build huge userbases while Japanese devs will ofter barely make a single format that rarely leaves their home country.
Skyrim = Let's get this baby out on the PC/PS3/360/YoMamma with full DLC support including a new frikkin island and for love of money get this out to as many countries as possible!
Final Fantasy Type-0 = I want the PSP and nothing else! Don't you dare let this thing leave Japan or you're fired!
Unsurprisingly Skyrim sold over 150 times more that Type-0
I realise the example is not directly related to MonHunt but I think it's a good clear-cut example of Japans strange mindset when it comes to formats, global releases and their strange tendency to completely switch formats mid-franchise from time to time. It's like the prospect of releasing on the Vita and 3ds is just too mindblowing for them.
