Square Enix actually outlined that issue.  Can't remember how they worded it.  Something about retailer insurance.  They were allowed to stuff the channel under condition they rebate unsold copies.  Quite a lot of unsold copies there are (Since, you know, Square Enix expected 5 million in less than a month.)


They shipped 3.4m copies so there is still over 1m copies in stores.  It will sell through them though, just not as fast as what they wanted it to.  As long as they make a 2nd game I'll be happy though.  It certainly has been a success, just maybe not as much as they wanted it to be.

Eidos was very happy with the game.  They were actually very happy with the game's sales.  Their publisher wasn't (But that mismanaging mess has been discussed at lengths in the other threads.)
