I was in a similar situation as you except it wasnt with Rated M games and violent/bloody games ;o.
It was with the constant flow of playing Mario/Pokemon/Zelda/Donkey Kong/Kirby and nothing else. I decided to venture out to other brands (thanks to Playstation) I managed to get into other series that I wouldnt normally would of been able to on a Nintendo system.
Over the years its gotten better on Nintendo systems (mostly on the portables - the consoles have had terrible third party support in comparison). I've also got into PC gaming as of 2012 and have played a mixture of what I used to play a lot along with some themes/different games.
At the moment the way I'm doing things - I take turns playing certain system of games.
Right now my routine is:
PS2/PS3 -> PC -> Wii/GCN -> PC -> PS2/PS3 -> PC -> Wii/GCN
while with portables its
PSP -> NDS -> PSP -> NDS
(Although at times I go out of the norm but that is only because I'm recording games which I dont count as part of the cycle)

Yeah I see where your coming at, I 'm like that to with Nintendo. though a bit different with me. I didn't mind playing Nintendo exclusive, my only issue is that they never tend to evolve their franchise. Metroid Other M may have not been the best ,but it wasn't a bad game I like the direction it made for the series, Luigi Mansion 2 feel like a new fresh of air thanks to the developers (Next Level Games), and Kid Icarus Uprising is a classic in my view.
Plus, I tend to game more on my 3DS then my home consoles.
