Time to get to work:

The exact view count isn't important. What's important is that those videos have as many or more views than their E3 counterparts, showing that Nintendo's ND audience is roughly the same size as their E3 audience. So... Nintendo's E3 conferences also attract "small potatoes."

Why are you comparing Nintendo numbers to Sony numbers? Even at E3, Sony gets way more viewers than Nintendo. Sony is just more popular among the E3 audience, the average person who keeps an eye on game news. Again, Nintendo Directs attract as many or more views as their E3 conferences. Don't believe me? Show me a video of a Nintendo E3 press conference with more hits than their pre-E3 Nintendo Direct from last year.
Or I can save you some time and tell you there isn't one -- excepting the Wii U reveal trailer from 2011. Being a short exerpt of their conference and being a freaking new hardware generation reveal kind of unbalances that comparison. The views on that pre-E3 Direct suggest to me that Nintendo gets an audience boost in their Directs around E3 time. Search the highest-watched E3 videos, at least from Nintendo; most of them are reveal trailers of Mario and Zelda games and such. Those will still be a thing through Nintendo Direct. Again, you really think people are going to ignore 3D Mario's next reveal trailer or the reveal of the next Smash Bros just because they don't take place during a huge, live conference? Well, you're wrong. Videos of the live conferences aren't even what's popular. Just videos of the games, which we still get.
So, new suggestion: why don't YOU show ME hits? Prove to me that Nintendo Directs can't and won't attract an audience of the size their live press conference would attract. Because I have offered evidence; all you've offered is that Sony videos are bigger than Nintendo videos, something that holds true no matter what format Nintendo uses.

They wanted to see games, and guess what, that opening also served as a big Skyward Sword trailer, featuring a lot of footage and details we hadn't seen yet. Guess what else, views didn't "drop off" after that; views were higher than usual for the opening because everyone loved it and probably kept coming back to it.
