I don't want to sound like a blind follower, but I honestly don't think Nintendo is that inept. I can go about spewing about how Nintendo does their own thing, but that's a given by now and I can only hope that Nintendo has something up their sleeves. As for digging their heads in sand and looking up at giants, that analogy is far from what the situation is. Nintendo has been the leader in innovation for the last 20 years. Time and time again, what nintendo does the industry follows. E3 has been the Mecca of video game information and each year we flock to see what's next, whose to say that this isn't what the industry will be in another 3 years. I follow games and video game companies so E3 is a big deal for me. But, E3 is only a week long extravaganza. With Nintendo Direct, it's been like E3 4 times a year last year. This year alone feels like E3 3 days within the last 5 months. I find nintendo direct fun to follow and since they're random, we get more E3days throughout the year.
Think about the advantage they have versus other companies who have to wait during specific conference events. The last Sony conference in March was a sweet treat for those waiting for gaming news. It was unexpected and didn't involve anytype of annual event. Now Microsoft is going to have a solo event in May that too is going to be a sweet treat. THe last nintendo direct was 36 minutes long, how about the next one; 40- an hour, in August, in October, in November: who cares, still better than waiting for a whole year.
