I didn't miss the point of your thread. I read your OP. You're saying that SMW, in retrospect, is guilty of many of the very same reasons/excuses that people use to dismiss the games that succeeded it. Correct?
But you see, there's something to be said about a game of SMW's caliber, highs and lows alike, coming along in 1990 and the "New" games arriving in 2006 and beyond. So playing even almost an exact copy of my beloved SMW now is not going to reach the level of the original for me because I've already experienced that game. It would have to be a truly superior experience in order to look back at SMW being "flawed" and when we're talking about games which I feel are decidedly inferior, SMW remains Mario's finest hour for me.
Simply put, SMW does not successfully warrant this type of thread because its successors can't compete with it (my opinion).
