It is hard to do any sort of surprising at all anywhere, unless you decide to go new interface route like Nintendo has. Nintendo has franchises for about everything gamers would want at this point. And they do these franchises in new ways, utilizing the second screen. An annoying aspect here is when Nintendo tries to do something different, out comes the complaining, "Don't want!"

Where are their major narrative based games? They've got competitive games for families and children to play on the couch with but where are they for them when they grow up? Kids don't need all the narrative in the world to play a game because their imaginations can amplify anything Nintendo creates. Nintendo creates a brand and sticks with it. They don't surprise with new IP's but redress their characters around the new consoles that they make with new gameplay styles. What has Nintendo come out with what people say, "Don't want!" I doubt it because they aren't even trying. They leave that up to third parties. They leave it up to aquisitions just like they did with Rare and now with Monolith. The day Rare left Nintendo was the day mature content on Nintendo consoles died for me.
The surprises have come from indy devs this gen some first party and major third party. Games like Mass Effect, Witcher 2, Journey, Unfinished Swan, Uncharted, Tall Tale games, and many other indy made games have set major standards.

When has Nintendo done major narrative based games? Nintendo does game games, that don't use lots of voice acting and so on. Thse games are really hard to pull off and make lots of money, and cost far more to produce. But, even then, what is going to be key IS to get major third-party titles that do narratives and so on. Whether Nintendo has this, is up in the area at this point.
