| Mr Khan said: That seems rather unnecessary. Though despite Capcom's apparent schizophrenia (with one hand they summon more and ambitious New IP, with the other they rehash everything they possible can, with one hand they are fair to Nintendo fans, while the other punches us in the collective sack), they are still among the best of the third parties out there today, on the whole reasonably responsive to fans, diverse in their publishing portfolio, and (again, such a rare quality in a third party that it must be made note of) halfway fair to the Nintendo base. |
There are worse things to copy than a game that cracked eight digits, and the Japanese take on dark fantasy has been really impressive in Demon's Souls/Dark Souls, Dragon's Dogma, and Soul Sacrifice. So I can't say I'm opposed.
There are still things to like about Capcom, and I can definitely see why a Nintendo fan would consider them an exceptional third party, but to me they seem to be over the hill as a company. The gaps left by the departures of Kamiya, Mikami, and Inafune haven't been filled by anyone. (Inafune in particular felt like a death knell for the company.) Ono is a phenomenally loveable motherfucker, but he's really the only personality they have left. Aside from DuckTales and D&D there's nothing they're releasing this year that I'm really excited about, and their earnings report basically says they intend to focus on games that will allow them to sell tons and tons of (on-disc, I'm sure) DLC. So I think things are going to keep going downhill for them from here.
