Unless the franchise in question fits in with the genre's Nintendo does or genre's that mesh well with Nintendo's target market I don't think they should.
Let MS/Sony have the Assassin's Creed/GTA/CoD crowd. There's no point fighting over that, Nintendo will lose.
If they want to pay to make Sega games exclusive or Lego games or niche genres like horror or SRPG or such I can see it working. At least it means people who love those types of games will get Nintendo's console. But you'll never get the core over unless Nintendo really ups it's online game, and even then it'll be hard.
