Great post, saved me the trouble of saying a lot of this.

 

Japan, at least so far as I'm concerned, has far and away the best talent in the industry and the best IPs. The fact that seemingly every game of serious promise, or the fact that every game that seems to get IT when it comes to game design and what players want (often in ways players can't yet articulate) tends to be SERIOUSLY undermarketed and underfunded points to a very serious managerial problem.

They've gotten so scared of taking charge and doing what they do best, and instead cling and use what little they are willing to invest into garbage western imitations.
