This is one of my many issues with the game, i.e. you cannot tell where the hell you are, or at what stage, level, world, or warp zone. I swear if you traverse back through the game you wouldn't be able to tell if you're on the second or the penultimate stage. Just keep press up on the left stick friend, it must end at some point.

Mildly yes. I find the stages just meld into one and the one dimentional combat doesn't help.

Well you haven't finished the game yet. You'll realize that the world is not one dimensional.
