They would still have to take the time to learn how to use new hardware. They would also be under the mercy of the hardware and instead of designing their hardware around the games, they would have to design their games around the hardware. Of the 3 companies, Nintendo is the only company that would actually do worse if they went 3rd party. Sony could do just as well making games on the wiiU and 720, and microsoft could do just as well on the wiiU and ps4. Nintendo would be better off not making console games and sticking with handheld games if they were to not make home consoles.
