New Million Seller! Luigi's Mansion 2 (/Dark Moon)
Luigi's Mansion 2 (Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon in North America) roared past 1 million sales the week ending April 6, just its third week on sale in Japan and its second in America and Europe. It is the 3DS's second new million seller of 2013, and its 14th overall.
This is the first game in the Luigi's Mansion series since the original title on GameCube, which sold about 3.6 million units lifetime. Something interesting to note is that after 3 weeks in Japan, Luigi's Mansion 2 has sold over 463k units, already surpassing the GameCube title's 458k lifetime sales in the region. Very impressive, Luigi! No doubt the popularity of handhelds over home consoles in Japan was a factor, as was the more-than-double 3DS install base compared to GameCube. Still, it's quite an accomplishment!
Above: the best chart you will ever see.
I expect Luigi's Mansion 2 to eventually surpass the original in sales.
^ In response to S. Peelman's question, the next million seller will likely be Tomodachi; however, it's possible (though unlikely) that Fire Emblem: Awakening will sell 180k in Europe in the same time it takes Tomodachi to sell 1 million in Japan, which will probably take 2 weeks.
