While there will always be a segment that clammers for more power and better graphics it's a well established fact that the most powerful console had never won a generation. PS2 was least powerful as was Wii.

The problem with the WiiU isn't that it lacks power, it's that it lacks BOTH power and a compelling 'hook'. The gamepad simply isn't enciting to anyone(generalized statement, I don't care if someone here finds it enticing), yet it adds $100 to the cost of a WiiU. If no one cares to buy a WiiU because of the gamepad, then the next selling points are the graphics/power and games - which (currently) it lacks in both. That is a recipe for disaster.

Its not particularly about who has the weakest console that wins the gen, but mostly the best product for the price that offers something new and that has the most third party support. The most important factor of the best selling consoles is based on who has the best third party support and the PS and PS2 had it. The Xbox 360 showed they were the more affordable console offering the same third party games as Sony. Nintendo had the best third party support because they had third parties under lockdown with not much room to breathe during the NES and SNES era. Microsoft kept eating away at Sonys third party exclusive lineup that no one expected them to ever touch. Nintendo fought for third party support, but only strong enough to get current (and soon to be last) gen support.
