Maybe so, but SMS BC was nice on the Megadrive and optional user-pays BC is a good compromise. Also consider: this suggests some sort of high bandwidth external interface, implying that the Xbox may have scope for being upgradeable. While that may have been confusing back in the day of the 32x, upgradeable consoles a'la the Steam thing seem desirable now.

There is a big difference in what Sega did: The converter did not work on its own! From what I heard mini60 will work on its own and could also feature some new functions in multimedia which the current 360 doesn't have.
