Well he is living off his savings (and has been for a year already) so I guess he just sees it as an unnecessary expense considering he has to pay for rent and food + any software lincese etc he needs to do his work. Not that animation is an industry you get into to get rich, most animators do work for a low wage unless you work at Pixar or Disney animation or something.
