If the other consoles underperform, it wouldn't be a problem for Nintendo. Japan already switched to handhelds, and Nintendo isn't going to get much love from third parties in the west, anyway. Also, with the NES / Wii, they have shown they can singlehandedly create a userbase on their own (not for the Wii U, of course, but whatever comes next).
The immediate future of the game industry doesn't hinge on the success of the PS4 / Nextbox. There's still the PC, mobile gaming, other consoles (Steam Box?), and PS360 out there. Just look at the PSP in Japan for example, it's a 10 year old console that's still outperforming its successor in software. It's a mistake to assume the PS4 / Nextbox are going to sell well right out the gate, lots of things can happen.
